Stacy Mitchell at the New Rules Project discusses research on the influence neighborhood stores have on walking and driving by nearby residents. Even with improved fuel economy standards and lower carbon content fuels, larger changes in travel behavior will be needed to meet carbon reduction goals. Neighborhood services are an important piece in providing travel choices and have shown impressive differences in travel behavior between neighborhoods without local services.
