Contra Costa County
The Agricultural Core is an area of prime agricultural lands located in eastern Contra Costa County between the City of Brentwood and the Town of Discovery Bay. The Agricultural Core is one of the remaining agricultural production centers in the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area, providing a local and accessible source of fruits and vegetables to Bay Area restaurants, farmers’ markets, and other retail food outlets. The pressure to urbanize the prime agricultural land in the Agricultural Core is extreme. From 1984 to 2004, almost 20,000 acres of Contra Costa prime agricultural land were converted from agricultural use, primarily to urban uses. Preserving this area for agriculture will reduce the reliance on the importation of fruits, vegetables, and other foods into the Bay Area from other states or countries.
