Soap Lake

Santa Clara County

Soap Lake is a floodplain in the Upper Pájaro River watershed comprised of a mosaic of agricultural lands and open rangelands. In addition to being a highly productive agricultural site, this area is recognized as being crucial for flood control to avoid flooding in downstream cities. As one of the last undeveloped stretches of land between the Santa Cruz Mountains and the Diablo Range, the Soap Lake floodplain is a crucial wildlife movement corridor, maintaining connectivity between these areas and preventing genetic isolation of populations of sensitive species in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The area provides habitat for a variety of species, including deer, coyotes, badgers, and mountain lions. Land preservation in this area would protect its value for habitat connectivity and watershed functions.
